Jim Schwartz, REALTOR®

Your Tofino real estate specialist

My introduction to real estate began in 1965 working for a title insurance and trust company in California where my job was a daily poster to title log books the company kept. This was done by hand from the daily record of real estate transactions, registered encumbrances, easements, rights of away, financial instruments, etc., etc. from the day before that were supplied by the county clerks office - sometimes 200 or more in a day. After a year of working in the office, working outside seemed so much more attractive and a new punchcard system looked like it was going to put me out of a job so I changed occupations. however, the vocabulary of real estate  stayed with me with the thought that when I was older real estate might feel better once I had a broader collection of life experience.

In 1989 I sold that place and moved out to a property on Chesterman Beach with a two-story house.

That seemed like the right time to get a real estate license. there was one other realtor here then, three realtors in Ucluelet and a few fill-ins from Port Alberni.

In 1992 I hit the deck running with my real estate license working for a small brokerage in Ucluelet for a year then switched to NRS Mid-Island Realty operating out of Port Alberni.

Mid island was then bought by a man in Nanaimo under the banner of a Windermere franchise which lasted about five years..... the sudden dissolution of Windermere Nanaimo resulted in the owners of mid Island Realty taking it back while offering RE/MAX Mid-Island Realty to the realtors from the West Coast and Port Alberni, who were left stranded with the dissolution of Windermere.... We then became RE/MAX Mid-Island Realty until Mid island Realty was purchased by Judy Gray and remains REMAX Mid-Island Realty.

I've had a brokers license since 1994 with commercial certification, and have been an associate broker ever since.

Starting out, one worked out of their home office with the only agency office in Port Alberni. my home office on chestermans beach was in the ground floor basement where many clients would just pop in like it was an office downtown. It worked until another real estate agency opened an office downtown so RE/MAX Mid-Island rented a space in town where Long Beach surf shop is now and operated out of there for a few years until we moved to the current location on Neill Street across from the liquor store.

The last 30 some odd years as a realtor has seen economic cycles, go up and down, subdivisions, developments, houses, commercial projects, condos, townhomes, affordable housing, strata properties, waterfront developments, and changes. it changed from a small fishing village of 600 independent people interdependent with a mix of forest workers, natives, fisherman, surfers and people associated with seasonal fishing into a destination tourist resort of over 2000 people where surfing, sportfishing, whale watching, the pristine environment, excellent restaurants, various festivals for food, music, culture, and world-class beaches attract people from all over the world to visit, work, live here and carry on remotely with whatever they do.

In the 70s, there was 1 employee in the district office. ..Today there are at least 30 and we have a brand new wastewater treatment facility so we really can call ourselves environmentally friendly. Our MLA and MP are also from here.

As part of the community for close to 50 years, my children have grown up here, I've been on the fire department, member then a Director of the chamber of Commerce, a district councillor for nine years, on the affordable housing committee for eight years, part of the design panel and the community plan oversight committee…

I'm committed to participating in the community in a cultural sense as an artist and a housing facilitator as a realtor.

My specialties are community knowledge and history, experience in real estate situations, real estate sales and listings, consultation, and specializing in full and accurate disclosure. And finally, satisfied customers.
